Hertfordshire pub hit by fire
A pub in Hertfordshire has been damaged after a fire broke out in the premises earlier this week.
Fire crews were called to the North Star pub in Royston at around 8.20am on January 31st after a passer-by spotted smoke billowing from the building and raised the alarm.
Billy McGill, incident commander, revealed that the fire, which was extinguished within 90 minutes, began in the basement area.
He told Cambridge News: "Luckily, no-one was inside at the time. The fire was contained to that one room, and smoke damage has spread through the rest of the building.
"If it was not for the prompt actions of the crews here it could have been a lot worse."
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, a fire risk assessment must be conducted on all commercial properties in England and Wales.
If a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment is not carried out, the Responsible Person faces up to two years in prison or an unlimited fine.
An investigation revealed the cause of the fire was accidental.
