Fire Risk Assessors Register

The FIA believes that any person trading on the provision of fire risk assessment ( FRA ) services, including sole traders, are a company and that end users should have basic protection in place. To this end, we have set up the FIA Fire Risk Assessment Register which lists companies that have demonstrated a baseline level of competence.

Initially, membership criteria consisted of a declaration to comply with a Code of Practice but we are working towards basing membership on third party certification to a UKAS accredited FRA company scheme. When two UKAS accredited schemes are available for FRA companies to choose from, our membership criteria will change again and members will be given a two year period to which they must gain certification to one of the schemes available. NB - All members listed have confirmed their intention to achieve this.

We recognise that companies need time to prepare and go through the certification process and that they often need help to achieve the requirements of such schemes. We aim to help prepare members to get ready to achieve third party certification, and so have changed the current membership criteria with this intention.

In the interim, while two UKAS schemes are developed, we now ask (since 1st April 2011) FRA members to provide evidence that they have:

  • A documented procedure to deal with complaints, deficiencies or defects
  • A register of approved sub-contractors, subject to periodic review
  • A documented management structure of the organisation (this could take the form of an organisation diagram, but the structure must separately identify sub-contractors and employees)
  • A controlled document list
  • A Management Review process
  • Adequate Professional Indemnity and Public Liability insurance on an each and every claim basis

We have also asked members to provide a list of their Fire Risk Assessors and to ensure that there has been some sort of assessment of their individual competence we have asked that they apply to join either:

  • The IFE Fire Risk Assessment Register
  • The IFSM Fire Risk Assessment Register
  • The IFPO Fire Risk Assessment Register
  • Or have been certificated by the Warrington Certification Personnel Fire Risk Assessment Scheme

Each of these options includes an assessment process and, whilst the FIA recognises that each assesses in different ways, we do not want to judge if one is better than another, so we have accepted all four existing methods.

The members included in the register have confirmed that their fire risk assessor(s) has completed the process or is in the process of being assessed, as well as providing the evidence requested. However, the FIA is not a Certification Body; therefore only basic checks have been carried out. We recommend any end user to carry out their own due diligence checks.
